A visit from two of Australia’s best bull riders has stirred excitement at NRL Cowboys House as students get ready to saddle up and experience the high intensity action of the PBR Grand Finals.

PBR Australia has generously donated more than 100 tickets to the PBR Grand Finals at the end of November to staff and students at the House, with riders Sam Woodall and North Queensland’s own Beau Willis dropping in to say g’day.

The event tickets will be given to students as a reward for good behaviour.

Sam and Beau were given a small taste of life at the House, joining in as graduate Frank Backo was given a student-led guard of honour and cultural dance on his way to his school formal.

Following the festivities, the riders spoke to students about mental resilience, the challenges of bouncing back from injury and what it takes to become a professional bull rider.

Students were also given the opportunity to try on some professional gear including helmets, vests and gloves.

The donation of tickets was made to the House after PBR Australia representatives toured the facility earlier in the year, as part of the organisation’s commitment to supporting local charities and community groups.

PBR Australia General Manager Glen Young said he was impressed by the pathways and opportunities offered to Indigenous students through NRL Cowboys House.

“Rodeo and bull riding rates very high amongst Indigenous kids’ interests, so we want to support NRL Cowboys House by giving them the opportunity to share a PBR experience with their students,” he said.

“Growing in life is about being exposed to experiences and many of these kids would come from remote locations having most likely only ever seen PBR on the TV or internet.

“This is their chance to see it live, yet at the same time watch a different kind of athlete achieving their dreams.

“All it takes is one moment that flicks the switch and inspires an individual to aim high and pursue a dream.”

The 2021 PBR Australia Grand Finals will be held at Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre on 26-27 November and is touted as one of the toughest sports on dirt.

The Townsville event is the final round of a year-long race for the national titles and is set to feature 22 of the nation’s best bull riders.

Two merchandise packs and a double pass were also donated for the Cowboys Community Foundation Charity Golf Day.
