Amazing weekend for Amazing Race

With a keen sense of adventure and a will to test their problem solving skills, NRL Cowboys House students took on an amazing challenge over the weekend.

Based on the hit TV show, the inaugural NRL Cowboys House Amazing Race saw students split into groups of ten before journeying across Townsville, completing tasks and solving clues to lead them to their next location.

Teams competed to be the first to complete all 10 activities, with prizes including a Cowboys Leagues Club dinner or movie night.

Each team worked independently, supported only by their House staff driver whose single task was to follow their team’s directions.

Director of Boarding Leigh Allender said House activities like the Amazing Race foster the students’ educational, personal, social, physical and cultural development and wellbeing.

“Team building activities like this allow students to develop stronger relationships and trust among each other,” he said.

“They also help our students get out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in different environments.

“Our values champion each student’s personal strengths, and the activities and puzzles involved in the Amazing Race help build respectful and functional relationships between boarders and staff.”

The activities tested a broad range of students’ skills with sports activities including throwing down cricket stumps, making basketball 3-pointers or running laps of a football field, while brain power tasks included buying their entire bus a drink with a limited amount of money from McDonald’s.

Some hilarious and creative results also came from students being asked to create and record a team TikTok video.

Students found themselves travelling to all corners of Townsville, exploring some of the city’s most iconic landmarks including Castle Hill, Jezzine Barracks and Riverway.

Leigh said overall, both students and staff had ‘an absolute blast’.

The weekend’s activities kick off a big week at NRL Cowboys House as focus turns to Friday’s NAIDOC Day activities and NAIDOC Ball.
