Eli’s dreaming big for business

Doomadgee’s Eli Taylor dreams of opening his own mechanic business back in his hometown, and with AMA Group’s support, he’s on his way.

Eli is a first-year apprentice mechanic/panel beater with Gemini Accident Repair Centre in Townsville, part of AMA Group who are leaders in the vehicle aftercare and accessories market and a Friend of the House, supporting the life-changing opportunities that NRL Cowboys House offers.

The Year-12 student is studying a Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology through Tec-NQ while boarding at the House and gaining valuable practical experience and training at Gemini Townsville’s Garbutt location.

Gemini Townsville Centre Manager Martin Dickinson says Eli’s personal drive to succeed is a credit to him and his family.

“Eli is a quiet achiever who knows what he wants and that he needs to work hard to reach his goals,” Mr Dickinson said.

“It has been a privilege to have Eli working with us since last year and we’re very proud to be able to support him through his apprenticeship.

“We love what NRL Cowboys House are doing for their students and becoming a Friend of the House was our way of recognising the need for a special program like this in our region.”

Eli’s transition from school to employment is a focus for House career transitions officer Antonio Winterstein, supported by Waanyi Downer.

“One of our goals is to create pathways to further education and employment for our students, in their preferred careers, and great matches like Eli and AMA Group are our model of how it can work really well,” Mr Winterstein said.

“Martin and his team are very engaged with Eli’s progress and supportive of his desire to take his trade back to his community and eventually train and employ others.

“They’re giving Eli a wonderful opportunity and we thank them for their vision and generosity in sharing not only their technical knowledge, but what it takes to run a customer-centric business.”

With COVID-19 restrictions likely to affect school delivery in Term 2, NRL Cowboys House is working with partner schools, families and employers to ensure curriculum continuity for Eli and his fellow students.
